Happy Valentine's Day to the real men out there! We know that all men are NOT users.

May your day be blessed! (And if you'd like to show that you care for young girls in healthy ways, please read below.)

A friend sent me a note this evening with a challenge for real men...

"All the way home I was thinking of your presentation and affecting the lives of young girls, changing the fabric of their past into something of the tapestry God intended…, and then I thought- what of the young men… who are a contributing factor for sure? I thought of the empty shell of a building, finally clear of garbage! What of the giftedness of the men in the church… their professional lives of electricians, plumbers, masonry… and what if they would be willing to do the work and invite the boys to learn from them… a short term apprentice with teachings to the kingdom interwoven? Perhaps that’s why the Lord gave you the ‘shell’… for the men to prepare the foundation for these young women to blossom…, and what if they brought alongside young men… and spoke into them skills of not only a possible profession…but of caring for a woman as God intended."

The property that has been donated for use as a Design Studio Outreach to At-Risk Girls is in the heart of the low-income, high crime neighborhoods and apartment complexes that we hope to impact. We need skilled and unskilled men to come along side the seamstresses and mentors to show they, too, "care" for these precious girls AND the young boys who will help to protect them.

Repurposing/redesigning donated dresses as a means of connecting with at-risk girls in order to earn the right to tell them how incredibly valuable, beautifully created and deeply loved they are.

Cross-Continent Engineers has donated the use of this 2,400 sq ft in their office on SE 121st and Lincoln for Adorned in Grace's Outreach to at-risk girls!
Westside Christian High School selected AIG's Outreach as it's service project
20 students, parents and staff worked at the site on Oct 15th to clean the basement and prepare for construction
Front Porch International has agreed to oversee permitting and construction. Construction volunteers and funds to pay for materials and services that are not volunteered are greatly needed! Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

Outreach Event - DIY Creations! December 3rd!

An Outreach to At-risk Girls event (DIY Creations!) will be Saturday, Dec 3 at the El Shaddai Center on SE 121st and Lincoln. Please pray for the girls that we are privileged to meet from this neighborhood. The White Event - as named by Lamont Kent for the innocence of the women we seek to befriend, was a Designer Rummage Sale & Silent Auction featured the fashion designs of Val (Lamont Kent), Sofada (Alice Dobson), and Ahja (Angela Decosta) and the work of Scarlet Cord. The evening included live dance & music performances by local artists as well.

Scarlet Cord and AIG teamed up with these creative, local business owners who desire to use their expertise to impact the community in a positive way.

Adorned in Grace has had an amazing run at the Fairview shop, raising over $5,000 for Door to Grace. Many brides have found their perfect dress and accessories through the support of volunteers who have kept the store running, providing personalized and exceptional customer service.

The Everharts have generously donated the Fairview location through the end of the year (2010). We are currently looking for a new location/warehouse space to hold our dresses after that. If you know of a possible location please email us - linda@compassionconnect.com

Adorned in Grace is completely organized and run by volunteers, including operating the store. A great big thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who have dedicated their Saturday's to be sales associates at the store. It has been fun, and it could not have happened without you!

At the same time, volunteers are still needed! If you are interested in dedicating any part of your Saturday between 10-5pm, please contact Linda - 503-679-2086. You can volunteer the whole time or a partial shift. Whatever you are available to give will be appreciated. Currently there are openings every Saturday through June 26th.

Gresham Outlook brings attention to local human trafficking issues

The front-page article includes detailed information of the situation locally and shares what local officials and legislature are doing to address the issue. It is strongly agreed that creating shelters is vital to breaking the cycle of young victims in sex-trafficking. According to Senator Wyden, “Without a place for the girls to escape to, they return to life on the street and to the same men who exploited them in the first place, that leaves police and prosecutors with no victim and no case.”

In the US it is estimated that there are only 70 shelter beds across all 50 states for victims of sex-trafficking to find safe harbor. Multnomah County Commisioner Diane McKeel is advocating for a 22-bed shelter in the Portland area for youth victims of sex-trafficking.

The Outlook also featured Adorned in Grace and the work that has been done and is being done to raise funds for Door to Grace's plan for a 10-bed shelter.

“We’re using a symbol of love, of purity, to attack the evil,” Tribbett added, pointing to the wedding dresses. “We feel that this is a very strong statement.”

Adorned in Grace celebrated the grand-opening of their store on March 13, 2010. Multnomah County Commission Diane McKeel, Mayor Mike Weatherby and other government officials were there to welcome AIG to the community.

Pastor Gary Tribbett shared the united vision of many pastors in the area to address the issue of local human-trafficking.

Diane McKeel shared the reality of the situation and shared her support.

Mayor Weatherby welcomed AIG to Fairview.

Marie Sanford, the "tornado beneath our wings" cut the ribbon, officially opening the store.

The Reality

It is often assumed that sex-trafficking is an evil in distant places like Thailand, Cambodia or Latin America, but it should be made known that it is very much an active force in the United States today. The FBI estimates that over 100,000 children and young women are trafficked in America today. The average age of a trafficked victim is 14 years old. The statistics are daunting, and the stories heart-breaking.

That is why we are excited to partner with Door to Grace to bring healing and hope to youth affected by sex-trafficking. Guided by scripture and God's heart for the broken, Door to Grace shares their vision:

"And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them" - Mark 10:16

"In 2009, it was estimated that fewer than 50 beds are available in the US for victims of sex trafficking. A handful of non-profit organizations are attempting to provide shelter and services for minor victims, sometimes with public assistance, and almost always without adequate funding or support.

Door To Grace founders and supporters seek to develop a model of care that will provide shelter and aftercare services specifically designed for minor domestic victims, but also one that is economically feasible so that it could be easily replicated in other US venues. The mission of Door To Grace is to establish protective shelter(s) and provide healing services to DMST victims in Oregon, primarily in the Willamette Valley, with a goal of rehabilitating victims and restoring them to full productive life in our communities. Door To Grace is currently researching peer agencies at sites in the US and Canada, and plans to have its program design validated by June 30, 2010. It is envisioned that the care model may need to include multiple care outcomes, including “de-programming”, “stabilization”, and “re-integration.”

Thus, Adorned in Grace invites you to join in supporting Door To Grace as they actively pursue to tangibly bring restoration to the broken hearts and lives of young people affected by sex-trafficking in the United States.
